Cape Town

Located on the shores of Table Bay, Cape Town was founded by the Dutch East India Company as a victualling outpost for Dutch ships sailing to India and the Far East. Jan van Riebeeck was appointed as the first Dutch governor and on 6 April 1652 established the first permanent European settlement in Southern Africa.
The settlement soon outgrew its original purpose as a supply station and Cape Town became the economic and cultural hub of the Cape Colony.  Cape Town was the largest city in South Africa until the Gold Rush on the Witwatersrand in the late 1800’s gave rise to Johannesburg.

Muizenberg

A 40km stretch of soft, white sand begins at Muizenberg beach and follows the coastline of False Bay in a wide arc.  All along the shores of the bay are picturesque and historical towns and villages.

Muizenberg beach has an international Blue Flag status and is both a safe bathing beach and a very popular surfing spot.

From Muizenberg a paved pedestrian pathway - just meters above the sea – makes a pleasant and invigorating walk to the beaches and rock-basin swimming pools of St. James and Kalk Bay.

Boyes Drive is a scenic mountain road that connects Muizenberg to Kalk Bay and it offers magnificent views of False Bay.  It is from this vantage point that shark-spotters keep a watch on the beaches below.  It is also a wonderful spot from which to view whales in season.

The whole coastline of False Bay is a whale watchers paradise during the months of August to October when whales come into the warm Indian Ocean waters to calf.

Muizenberg offers many different opportunities for relaxing and entertainment:

  • A raised promenade with views over the beach and the coastline
  • Public swimming pools
  • Waterslide
  • Putt-putt course
  • Zandvlei yacht club and boats and kayaks for hire
  • Windsurfing and surfboards – schools and hire
  • The Masque Theatre offers regular productions
  • Various coffee shops, restaurants and bars are in the village
  • Hiking on Muiz Mountain with trails south to Simon’s town or north to Constantia or across the mountains to Hout Bay.
  • Clovelly Country Club and Golf course is 5 km away
  • Fishing is a popular sport from the rocks on the catwalk

Kalk Bay

Kalk Bay was once a whaling station but is now a fashionable village full of interesting shops, bistros, antique dealers, art galleries, restaurants and late-night bars.

St James

From Muizenberg to St James are many historical buildings dating back to the era when the Cape Colony was part of the Victorian Empire.  Cecil John Rhodes, Count Labia and several mining magnates built their seaside homes and mansions here.
St James beach has colourful beach huts and a large tidal pool that is sheltered from the wind.

Simons Town

A scenic coastal road or train journey connects Muizenberg to Simontown, which retains much of its former Victorian architecture.   Simon’s town has been used as a sheltered naval base for centuries.  The town and surroundings offer many interesting venues.

Boulders Beach is home to the African Penguin who walks across the pedestrian pathways on their way from the sea to their nests

The spectacular Cape of Good Hope nature reserve covers the spur of land at the southern end of Africa.  The reserve is inhabited by indigenous buck and small animals and covered with numerous species of Fynbos
